I thrive in a fast paced, high customer service demand environment with a great deal of people interaction. As University Dean of the School of Design I provide leadership and oversight of a portfolio of university wide programs to assure quality, viability, and compliance with university policies. My duties concentrate on assuring the institution’s mission and the mission of the School of Design are clear and articulated publicly. I am cogent that these missions guide the institution’s operations.This is why I assure the School of Design’s resources, structures, and processes are sufficient to fulfill its mission, improve the quality of its educational offerings, and respond to future challenges and opportunities.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions)
I am responsible for the quality, health, and financial viability of a portfolio of programs and related courses. These include: Visual Communication (Graphic Design, Illustration and Web Design), Fashion Marketing and Design (Fashion Design, Fashion Marketing and Costume Design), Fashion Marketing ( Marketing and Retailing), Interior Design (Residential Design, Commercial Design and Building Information Modeling), Media Production (Digital Film and Post Production, Audio Recording and Sound Design).
My first responsibility is to assure the School of Design acts with integrity and its conduct is ethical and responsible. I make sure the School of Design demonstrates responsibility for the quality of its educational programs, learning environments, and support services. This means unceasing assessment of student learning through processes designed to promote continuous improvement.
I keep my programs fresh by leading my academic team with an open mind towards new ideas in teaching and learning and new ideas to obtain academic quality. This includes creating and developing concepts for new programs, specializations, and certifications. My process includes guiding viable concepts through the new program development process; leading biennial program reviews and coordinating program revisions or teach-outs as necessary. The aim is to assure degree programs are appropriate to higher education with broad learning and skills integral to School of Design programs
As chair of the Program Curriculum Committee I facilitate the creation and management of development of relevant Program Learning Outcomes with map to Terminal Course Objectives (TCOs). All learning outcomes are linked to the institution’s General Education Objectives and to Blooms Taxonomy. I require all faculty and staff to use these learning outcomes as their guidelines in the classroom to ensure that quality and effectiveness in teaching and learning is taking place.
My duties include maintaining specialized and programmatic accreditation. I contribute to the development of university-wide academic policy development and implementation as well as strategic planning in support of the university's mission and goals. I develop and maintain outreach activities and create university-wide Program Advisory Boards to solicit practitioner support for and input to our curriculum.
As University Program Dean I perform the following duties:
- University-wide School of Design program management.
- Encourages faculty to participate in university activities.
- Encourages faculty development.
- Works with program chairs and faculty to develop concepts for new programs, specializations, and certifications; guiding viable concepts through inception, development, approval by the Board of Directors and implementation.
- Staff supervision for the portfolio of School of Design programs.
- Ensure effective support of assigned programs across the university in coordination with the office of Institutional Effectiveness and other university Deans. This includes development and implement of assessment activities in order to provide assessment of program and course objectives ensuring consistency of assessment across the institution.
- Monitors outside third party Area Concentration Achievement Tests (ACAT) assessment for program validation.
- Ensures consistency of program offerings, through development and revision of master course outlines, syllabi, course scheduling and other appropriate course support across the university.
- Assists the CEO, Provost, campus Presidents, campus Vice Presidents of Academic Affairs and the Vice President for Planning and Effectiveness in regional, state, and programmatic accreditation efforts. This includes self-study preparation, focused visits, substantive change requests, and comprehensive evaluations.
- Responsible for obtaining and maintaining programmatic accreditations such as the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) and Council of Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) for the School of Design.
- Mentors and develops academic leadership for the academic affairs staff.
- Provides leadership and oversight to ensure compliance with the university’s regional accreditation as a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and School’s Higher Learning Commission (HLC).
- Maintains institutional standards and all other federal and state regulatory requirements such as yearly updates for the Illinois Bureau of Higher Education (IBHE) and the State of Georgia’s Nonpublic Postsecondary Education Commission (NPEC).
- Ensures student outcomes are achieved and institutional effectiveness and institutional research methods are evaluated regularly in support of continuous improvement.
- Leads program chairs and faculty through the biennial Program Review process. This includes organization of data collection and analysis. Working in tandem with corporate headquarters, program chairs and faculty at each individual campus to collect data. Based on recieved data I write the report. The report give me the opportunity to make recommendations for academic improvement and set the course of the School of Design for the future. This process also includes presentation of the review to the CEO, Provost, campus Presidents, campus Vice Presidents of Academic Affairs and the Board of Directors.
Other responsibilities include:
- Developing community outreach initiatives to raise awareness of the university and to support local community activities.
- Development of industry relationships to help our student obtain internships and better job placement.
- Working with industry leaders to stay on top of cutting edge developments in industry concepts, theories and technology.
- Maintaining a unified portfolio of current textbooks at all campuses.
- Maintaining a unified inventory of current hardware and software technologies unique to each design program at each campus.
- Working with admissions for new enrollment strategies, improved shows rates and starts.
- Working with program chairs to showcase student achievements in community events, campus art galleries and on the university website.
- Maintaining new congressional standards to achieve gainful employment strategies.
- Working with campus facility managers as an advocate for improved facilities, updated equipment and IT infrastructure to meet the unique needs of each program at each campus.
- Working with the online campus course development team to maintain as well as improve online learning techniques.

- Planed, coordinated, reviewed, and supervised the educational services of the respective program.
- Coordinated and assigned activities with other university programs, departments, and the community.
- Provided support to all program instructors, staff, and other employees, and assists the Vice President of Academic Affairs in maintaining and enhancing the program.
- Curated the Gallery of Art and Design with a series of exhibitions reflecting student work, faculty work and guest artist from the community and the industry.
Acting President 6/04 -7/04
- Successfully provided leadership as interim campus president during a brief period of time in the 2004 academic year. This occurred while the President was away on business at the London campus and at the annual leadership conference. Daily operations ran smoothly under my temporary tenure as President.
Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs 2002 to 2003
I managed daily operations of academic programs through the supervision of academic deans.
- Provided oversight for the recruitment and hiring of full and part-time faculty.
- Conducted all weekly Dean’s meetings and quarterly faculty meetings.
- Practiced successful conflict resolution with faculty, staff and students.
- Measured and evaluated outcomes of the academic process to ensure that all programs were meeting their objectives and the requirements of the state and regional accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).
- Maintained the campus academics budget for financial viability. Worked with the campus P&L, fixed costs, variable costs and contribution margin.
- Developed and implemented retention policies.
- Chaired search committee for hiring of a new Vice President of Academic Affairs.
Director: School of Art & Design 2000 to 2001
- As Director of the School of Art and Design my chief responsibility was to oversee the redesign of curriculum for all academic programs in the university system.
- Supervised the development of new curriculum for all programs at all campuses by working with twenty department chairs from five campuses.
- Chaired the university wide curriculum committee that redesigned of curriculum in each academic program using technology as a cornerstone.

- Managed daily operations of the program providing academic and financial leadership.
- Developed and implemented a five year plan for retention and growth of the department.
- Registered and advised all students in the Visual Communication program.
- Created term course offerings and schedules,
- Responsible for long range planning.
- Created and administered operational and capital departmental budgets.
- Managed all faculty and staff in the department including hiring’s and firings.
- Developed all exhibitions in the university’s gallery of Art and Design showcasing student, faculty, guest artists and international artist’s work.
- Taught Visual Communication classes in: Typography, Graphic Design, Illustration, Package Design, Capstone Classes in Senior Thesis and Portfolio.
- Also taught foundation classes in Basic Principles of Design, Color Theory, Foundation Studio, Art History, and fine art classes in Three Dimensional Design, Drawing and Painting.

During the period I taught classes in color theory, basic design, and freehand drawing. During this period I created and curated the universities first art gallery.
